This battle was a significant fight in the Chattanooga Campaign of the American Civil War, and it played a crucial role in helping Union forces secure control of the city of Chattanooga.

Point Park is situated on Lookout Mountain, a strategic location during the battle. The Union forces, led by General Joseph Hooker, attacked the Confederate positions on Lookout Mountain, resulting in a successful Union victory. The park was established to preserve and honor the memory of this important battle and the soldiers who fought there.

Over the years, Point Park has become a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors who come to learn about the history of the Civil War and enjoy the scenic views from its vantage point. If you want to hike to Point Park, you can start at the Craven's house, which is also a part of the military park crowned by the tall New York Memorial. The house was built by Robert Craven in the 1850s but played a significant role for both forces during the Northern invasion of Chattanooga from the West. One of the most significant events associated with Craven's House was the Battle of Lookout Mountain, which took place on November 24, 1863. This battle was a critical engagement during the Chattanooga Campaign of the American Civil War. Before the Southern troops retreated up the mountain to modern-day Point Park, the South used the house as a headquarters. However, the role reversed when the Union pushed the South up the mountain setting the stage for the Battle Above the Clouds. Here at the house, the fierce thrust up the mountain by the Union was launched.  

The hike from the Craven's House and Point Park is packed with all the goodies you might want on the trail - history, monuments, gorgeous forest, stunning views, impressive bluffs, and more! While the trails are not treacherous, the hike is challenging. We rate it a moderately strenuous hike up half of Lookout Mountain. Still, every step is a discovery, and the whole outing will surely be a lasting memory.
