From sweeping vistas of the Tennessee River Gorge to dense forests and rolling hills, there are tons of great hiking trails for every skill level within a short drive of downtown Chattanooga.

Skyuka and Bluff Trails Loop

Location: Lookout Mountain, GA

Distance: 11.3 mile loop

Right across the street from our Wauhatchie property lies the trailhead for this awesome loop that takes you through mature hardwood forests, past a scenic waterfall, and to several breathtaking overlooks of the Tennessee River Gorge.

The views from the end of the Bluff Trail are particularly stunning, giving you a birds-eye perspective of the river winding through the mountains below. 

Fun fact: Our Skyuka Chalet was named after this trail!

Snoopers Rock Trail

Location: Signal Mountain, TN

Distance: 5.9 miles out-and-back

Located along the Cumberland Trail in the Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area and just a 40-minute drive from downtown Chattanooga, the Snoopers Rock Trail showcases the classic Tennessee beauty of this area. The trail meanders through unique rock formations lush forests, over creeks, and takes you by several small waterfalls.

The highlight of this trail is a rock outcropping called Snoopers Rock that provides expansive views overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge. Pack a picnic and hang out at Snoopers Rock to soak in the spectacular panoramas!

Cumberland Trail (Via Mullens Cove Loop)

Location: Prentice Cooper State Forest

Distance: 9.8 mile loop

One of the closest state forests to Chattanooga, Prentice Cooper, is home to the diverse Mullens Cove Loop that takes you through a mesophytic forest along cliffsides, over rock outcroppings, and to several gorgeous overlooks.

The views get better and better as you gain elevation along the trail, and with so many different ecosystems and landscapes, this hike has a little bit of everything!

Raccoon Mountain Reservoir Loop

Location: Raccoon Mountain

Distance: 13.5 mile loop

Located just west of downtown Chattanooga, this epic loop trail circles the Raccoon Mountain Reservoir, taking you through hardwood forests and along miles of undeveloped shoreline. 

The nearly 14-mile route has some good climbs, but the panoramic views of the reservoir from the ridges are worth every step. This trail is great for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running. 

Signal Point Trail (Via Suck Creek Road) 

Location: Signal Mountain, TN

Distance: 3.6 miles out-and-back

Starting from the Signal Point parking area, this moderate trail follows a rocky path to a point overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge. Scramble out on the rocks and cross a long, wooden rope bridge to get front-row views of the river snaking between Walden Ridge and Raccoon Mountain across the gorge.

This relatively short trail makes it a good option for a quick but scenic hike near town.

Tips for Hiking Near Chattanooga

Now that you've gotten a taste of the amazing trails in the area, here are a few tips to make the most of your hike:

  • Check the weather - Many trails here are exposed, so check the forecast and prepare for rain, sun, wind, etc. Layers are key!
  • Bring plenty of water - Stay hydrated, especially on hot sunny days.
  • Wear sturdy shoes - Trails here are rocky and uneven, so leave the flip-flops at home.
  • Pack a trail map/GPS - Some trails are not well marked, so come prepared with a map and/or GPS.
  • Watch for wildlife - Keep an eye out for deer, turkeys, snakes, and other critters.
  • Stay on designated trails - Don't create new trails or take shortcuts to avoid erosion.
